Johnson Canyon Arch in October 2026
Quick Stats:
.74 miles each way
cost: $20 at the entrance to Snow Canyon
We made a trip to St. George in October of 2026 so that my husband could run the St. George Marathon. I was very grateful to be visiting St. George when it wasn't the summer season, because I'd been wanting to visit Johnson Arch and it is closed to the public between March 15th and September 14th.
The hike is very short and easy. It is only .74 miles from the parking lot to the arch, one way. You aren't allowed to stand underneath or climb on top of Johnson Arch. It is fenced off so that you can only view it. Having said that, there were plenty of footprints in the dirt showing that people had gone beyond the fence. They are trying to protect the arch from damage and to also support the wildlife in the area. The hike is short and easy and well worth it.

Unfortunately, the arch itself is not marked on google maps -- if I'd realized that I would have grabbed a pin when I was at the viewing area. The trailhead is marked, though, and it is here: Johnson Arch Trailhead
The parking area has plenty of spots. Note that the trail to Johnson Arch is actually across Snow Canyon Drive, it does not start from the parking lot. So after you park, cross the street to the trailhead, which is clearly visible. We saw someone finishing the hike just as we were starting, and he said to be sure to pay attention because the arch is on the right-hand side, and is not at the end of the trail. You can continue to hike for a little ways and then turn around. The arch is very large and quite noticeable, so I'm not sure how anyone could miss it, but I guess if you are expecting it to be at the very end of the trail that could be confusing. It is near the end.

the parking area -- you can hike over to the scout cave from here also, although it's more than 3 miles, so keep that in mind if you decide to take the detour, especially in the hot St. George sun.
